Tech Chat | What is NTRIP Caster?

The NTRIP protocol is no stranger to surveyors, which consists of NTRIP Client, NTRIP Caster and NTRIP Server. During our daily surveying tasks, what we used most frequently is NTRIP Client (rover) and NTRIP Server (base). Today let’s talk about NTRIP Caster.

To know about NTRIP Caster, you must know what NTRIP is first. Simple understanding, NTRIP is a protocol for differential data transmission through the network.

Tech Chat - What is NTRIP?

  1. Ntrip Source is used to generate GNSS correction data and submit the data to Ntrip Server;
  2. Ntrip Server is responsible for submitting GNSS correction data to Ntrip Caster;
  3. Ntrip Caster is the correction data center, responsible for receiving and sending GNSS data;
  4. After Ntrip Client logs in, Ntrip Caster sends GNSS correction data to it.

At present, most of the receivers can realize the function of Ntrip Server. The receiver sends the generated correction data to Ntrip Caster through the network, and Ntrip Caster can receive correction data from different base stations at the same time.

There are two options for Ntrip Caster to send correction data to Ntrip Client:

One is to directly forward the correction data generated by Ntrip Source, and Ntrip Client only needs to select a specific mount point. Ntrip Server may have multiple mount points and use different names to distinguish them.

The second is to generate a virtual short-distance reference station (usually within a few meters of the rover) for the Ntrip Client by solving the correction data of multiple Ntrip sources. In this case, Ntrip Client needs to send its own coordinates to Ntrip Caster, and Ntrip Caster can thus generate a virtual reference station (VRS).

For SV100 GNSS receiver, it was designed with Ntrip server and Ntrip Caster. So it can work as a single reference station and send correction data through Ntrip Caster without extra software. You need to configure both Ntrip Server and Ntrip Caster when you use this protocol. The setting is shown below:

Configuration of Ntrip Server:

  • Set the Ntrip Server address and Nrtip Server port; this IP address is the same as SV100 IP address, and the port should be mapped by router.
  • Enter custom username and password
  • Access point: the Ntrip Caster mount point
  • Enable Active button of Ntrip Server, Press OK to save the configuration

Configuration of Ntrip Caster:

  • Enter port, this port should be the same as Ntrip Server
  • Enter Password, this password should also be the same as Ntrip Server
  • Enable Active button of Ntrip Caster, press OK to save configuration

All configurations of Ntrip Caster are shown above, then you can use the rover to log in to the public network IP and port of SV100 to obtain correction data.

If you don't have a static IP, you can also use DDNS to log in through the domain name and port.
