Tech Chat | What is APN & How To Setup in SingularXYZ Products?

Understanding the role of APN (Access Point Name) is crucial for those who use mobile internet services, such as internal GSM mode of RTK devices. In this blog, we will explain what APN is, how it works, and how to configure it in SingularXYZ products like the SV100 and SingularPad.

What is APN?

An APN (Access Point Name) is a critical parameter in mobile communications that allows a mobile device to connect to the internet. It acts as a gateway between the mobile network and another network, usually the public internet. The APN settings determine the IP address assigned to the device, the security methods used, and how the device connects to the internet or other services like MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service). Essentially, the APN is crucial for enabling mobile internet connectivity and ensuring data transmission is correctly routed.

How Does APN Work?

When a mobile device initiates an internet connection, it uses the APN settings to communicate with the mobile network operator's servers. These settings contain essential information such as:

  • Proxy Servers: Facilitate data routing.
  • Port Numbers: Specify the communication ports.
  • Authentication Types: Define security protocols (e.g., None, PAP, CHAP).
  • IP Addresses: Ensure proper identification and routing.

By consulting these settings, the device can establish a connection, allowing for smooth internet access and communication with online services.

Setting Up APN in SingularXYZ Devices

When using SingularXYZ devices that support 4G functions, setting up the correct APN is essential for reliable internet connectivity. Here we will take SV100 and X1 as examples to introduce 2 configuration methods.

Configure via Web Page – SV100

Connected via WiFi, you can access the web page of SV100. Go to Device Configuration >> GSM Config, you can set the APN information according to the SIM card you use and startup the 4G signal.

  • APN: Enter this according to the type of SIM card you are using. This information is typically provided by your mobile network operator.
  • Username and Password: These credentials are usually supplied by the SIM card provider.
  • Authentication Type (AUTH): There are four types: None, PAP, CHAP, PAP\CHAP. In most cases, select "None". If there are specific requirements, consult with your SIM card supplier.

Configure via SingularPad – X1

For smart antennas like X1, you can connect it to SingularPad software via Bluetooth. When setting it to Internal GSM/Device Internet mode, you can configure the APN settings similarly to ensure reliable internet connectivity.

By properly setting the APN, you ensure that your SingularXYZ devices connect efficiently to the internet, providing seamless operation and data transmission for your surveying projects.
