Tech Chat | How to judge the waterproof performance of products? - IP67/IPXX

When shopping for electronics, such as cameras, smartphones, you may be concerned about a key performance: is it waterproof? Most devices will list a parameter of IP67 or IP68 to show their high water resistance.

So what exactly does this IP67 refer to? What does the "6" stand for, and what does the "7" stand for?

International Protection Marking (IPXX)

The International Protection Mark, also known as Ingress Protection, grades the resistance of an enclosure to the ingress of dust or liquids. The ratings are widely used throughout various industries.

IP code ratings are published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). From their website information, the IP code is composed of two numerals.

The first numeral refers to the protection against solid objects and is rated on a scale from 0 (no protection) to 6 (no ingress of dust).

The second numeral rates the enclosure's protection against liquids and uses a scale from 0 (no protection) to 9 (high-pressure hot water from different angles).

IP67

According to the rating tables above, IP67 means the device is completely dust-proof and can be protected against temporary immersion in water.

For the purpose of IP67 testing, the product will generally be immersed within 1 meter of water for 30 minutes to see if it can still continue to work.

Even so, the IP rating only represents one of the performance of the product. It is not recommended for long-term use in such an extreme situation. But it will reassure consumers that in case of an accident, such as falling into the water, it can still be used normally after being taken out in time.

As a surveying equipment provider, we deeply know that surveying equipment is precious to all surveyors. So the waterproof and dustproof capability is also an essential feature of all surveying equipment. SingularXYZ Y1 GNSS RTK receiver is IP67 rated, securing your device in the field work.
