Tech Chat | Understanding Different Angle Units in Total Station Surveying

In surveying and mapping, angle measurements are vital, but different regions or industries often use varying angle units. The TS1000 total station accommodates this diversity by supporting several angle units, including DEG (Degree), GON (Gradian), and MIL (Milliradian).

This blog will help you understand the differences between these units and guide you on how to switch the angle unit settings on your TS1000 total station.

Differences Between Angle Units

Angle units determine how a circle is divided. The three most common units—DEG, GON, and MIL—have unique divisions, applications, and conversion relationships.

1. DEG (Degree)

  • Definition: A circle is divided into 360 equal parts, with each part being 1 degree.
  • Applications:
    • Widely used in daily life, geometry, astronomy, and geography.
    • Standard for longitude, latitude, and angle measurements on maps.
  • Conversions:
    • 1 Degree = 1/360 Circle
    • 1 Degree = π/180 Radians

2. GON (Gradian)

  • Definition: A circle is divided into 400 equal parts, with each part being 1 gradian (GON).
  • Applications:
    • Common in engineering and mapping, especially in Europe.
    • Simplifies slope measurements due to its direct relation to percentages.
  • Conversions:
    • 1 GON = 1/400 Circle
    • 1 GON = 0.9 Degrees
    • 1 GON = π/200 Radians

3. MIL (Milliradian)

  • Definition: A circle is divided into 2000 or 6400 equal parts, depending on the standard:
    • NATO Standard: 6400 MIL per circle.
    • Metric Standard: 2000 MIL per circle.
  • Applications:
    • Essential for military operations (e.g., artillery adjustments).
    • Used in precision instruments and optical devices.
  • Conversions:
    • NATO Standard: 1 MIL ≈ 1/6400 Circle ≈ 0.05625 Degrees.
    • Metric Standard: 1 MIL = 1/2000 Circle = 0.18 Degrees.

How to Switch Angle Units on TS1000

The TS1000 allows you to switch between angle units easily:

1. Power On: Hold F2 + POWER simultaneously when the device is powered off.

2. Access Settings: Press F1 to enter the UNIT SET menu.

3. Select Angle Unit: Click F3 to navigate to ANGLE, then choose the desired unit (DEG, GON, MIL).

4. Confirm Selection: Press F4 (ENTER) to save your choice.

Selecting the right angle unit is critical for accurate measurements in diverse applications, from mapping to military use. The TS1000's flexibility in supporting multiple angle units ensures it can meet regional or industry-specific requirements effortlessly.
